This committee is co-chaired by trustee Anne Whitman and member Marcia Hamilton. Focus is on celebrating our Green Chamber business members and generating new ideas to improve our quality of life. The Green Committee meets the fourth Thursday of each month at noon at QFC (upstairs).

Below is a draft of the North Mason Chamber of Commerce Green Business Criteria Checklist:

The following criteria are used by the North Mason Chamber of Commerce to award a business the "Green Business" designation. There are specific minimum criteria to be designated as a Green business and additional criteria for outstanding star awards. Please check your "green business" practices and total your score!

WATER CONSERVATION

  • Written procedures for water conservation
  • Water saving instructions in restrooms
  • Employees instructed on water conservation at meetings/trainings
  • Inspected and corrected water system leaks
  • Installed low volume flush toilets or reduce volume by placing bricks in tank
  • Checked and repaired Irrigation system for leaks
  • Adjusted sprinkler time for season
  • Water in non-daylight hours
  • Installed low flow faucets
  • Use dry surface cleaning methods followed by damp mopping
  • Changed window cleaning from periodic to as needed.
  • Use bucket and squeegee vs. power washing
  • Landscaped with drought resistant planting
  • Collecting rainwater for irrigation

    ENERGY CONSERVATION
  • Written procedures for energy conservation
  • Employees instructed on energy conservation
  • Yearly check of HVAC equipment
  • Conducted energy audit by PUD 3 (Call 275-2833 ext 0777)
  • Upgraded incandescent lighting with low energy lighting
  • Procedure to turn off lights, computers & electrical equipment not needed (night & not in use)
  • Installed programmable thermostat for heating and cooling Set 78F for cooling and 68F for heating
  • Installed insulation on all hot water pipes
  • Inspected and installed weather stripping on doors & windows
  • Replaced inefficient windows with or have Low-e double plane windows
  • Installed occupancy sensor lighting in low occupancy area
  • Installed or use ceiling fans to increase air circulation and reduce need for air conditioning in Restrooms, storerooms and conference rooms
  • Converted electric hot water heaters to tank less heaters
  • Replaced inefficient electrical equipment with newer efficient equipment -refrigerators. etc
  • Using Solar energy sources

SOLID WASTE REDUCTION

  • Written procedures for Reduction( refuse), Recycle & Reuse
  • Employees instructed on solid waste reduction
  • Set printer and copier default to double sided
  • Reusing printed paper for ie. scratch pads, drafts, reusing envelopes (cover old addresses
  • Recycle bins or area identified
  • Using recycled paper wherever possible
  • Reusing packaging material
  • Using Mugs rather than plastic, paper or styrofoam cups
  • Circulating memos rather than making individual copies
  • Donated unneeded equipment and furniture
  • Specifying deliveries in reusable or returnable containers
  • Other

POLLUTION PREVENTION

  • Written procedures for pollution prevention
  • Employees instructed on pollution prevention
  • Reduced stormwater runoff from property
  • No pressure washing of sidewalks or parking areas
  • No irrigation runoff
  • Using ecologically clean cleaning products
  • Minimum use of fertilizers on landscaping
  • Keep sidewalks and parking areas clean of refuse
  • Air Pollution
  • No outdoor burning
  • Reduced vehicle mileage
  • Installed low impact development to reduce storm water runoff (rain gardens swales)
